As a Patient Financial Counselor, you will play a critical role in ensuring patients understand their health plan benefits, financial obligations, and payment options. You will be responsible for assisting patients with insurance verification, payment collection, and financial counseling to facilitate a smooth and transparent financial experience. This role heavily focuses on Medical Collections & Follow – Up, Phone calls to insurance carriers, submitting clinical documentation to insurance if requested.


This is a hybrid position


Key Responsibilities:



  • Advise patients and/or family members on health plan benefits, exclusions, and financial obligations.


  • Determine primary coverage when multiple insurances are involved and verify membership and insurance eligibility for services rendered.


  • Collect payments, deposits, and arrange payment plans as appropriate, ensuring signed acknowledgement of financial responsibility.


  • Assist patients with Medicaid and/or SSDI coverage applications as needed, obtaining authorizations and processing forms to secure payments.:


  • Proactively contact patients to pre-register for selected procedures and advise them of estimated cost shares.


  • Complete admission requirements, ensuring all necessary documents, authorizations, and consents are obtained and payer pre-certification/medical review requirements are met.


  • Document pertinent information and financial counseling activities in accordance with department and regulatory policies.


  • Communicate financial payment issues to appropriate representatives in patient care areas and inform supervisors of potential postponements or cancellations of elective or non-urgent care.


  • Assist customers with complaints or inquiries regarding bills, payment policies, and health plan benefits, following up on issues as needed.


  • Review work queues related to registration, insurance, and financial requirements for emergency hospital patients.


  • Collect cash, check, or credit card payments for services rendered, ensuring accuracy and compliance with authorization requirements.


  • Balance cash register receipts, reconcile discrepancies, and prepare bank deposits.


Requirements:



  • Proficiency in 10-key by touch.


  • Knowledge of medical terminology, Medicare, and Medicaid claim processing.


  • Familiarity with CPT-4/ICD-10 coding systems.


  • Ability to work with medical charts, fee schedules, and insurance/managed care requirements.


  • A minimum of 3 years of recent experience in financial counseling and payment arrangement negotiations in a healthcare setting.


  • A minimum of 2 years experience in a leadership role.


  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact effectively with patients and staff.


  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information.
