The ideal candidate will bring strong accounting skills and a passion for supporting the mission of a nonprofit organization. As a Staff Accountant, you will play a critical role in managing financial transactions, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations specific to nonprofit organizations.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare and maintain accurate financial records, including general ledger entries, bank reconciliations, and month-end closings.
Assist with the preparation of financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards (FASB).
Maintain and reconcile grant funding accounts, ensuring proper allocation of expenses per grant requirements.
Assist in the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, including donors, board members, and auditors.
Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring timely and accurate processing of invoices and payments.
Track and report on restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring compliance with donor stipulations and grant agreements.
Prepare and support the preparation of annual 990 filings and audit schedules.
Assist with the annual audit process by providing necessary documentation and working closely with external auditors.
Monitor and ensure compliance with nonprofit regulatory requirements, including tax-exempt status and reporting obligations.
Support month-end and year-end closings, ensuring that financial data is accurately recorded.
Provide recommendations to streamline accounting processes and improve financial reporting.
Assist in developing and implementing financial policies and procedures to maintain internal controls.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or nonprofit accounting certification is a plus).
Minimum of 2-3 years of accounting experience, with at least 1 year of experience in the nonprofit sector.
Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, including fund accounting, grants management, and IRS regulations (specifically Form 990).
Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar) and advanced Excel skills.
Strong understanding of GAAP and FASB standards as they relate to nonprofit organizations.
Ability to prepare and review financial statements, budgets, and reconciliations.
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact with staff, board members, donors, and auditors.
Ability to work independently, as well as part of a collaborative team.
Preferred Skills:
Experience working with grant-funded organizations or federal/state funding.
Knowledge of nonprofit tax laws, reporting requirements, and financial statement disclosures.
