Payroll Specialist

LHH Recruitment Solutions is partnering with a client to hire a Payroll Specialist for a contract opportunity in Berkeley, California. In this role, you will be responsible for managing all aspects of full-cycle, multi-state payroll processing, ensuring accuracy, and compliance with federal and state regulations. Ideally, you will have extensive experience in payroll administration, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.


PLEASE NOTE: All duties for this role are performed at the client’s office in Berkeley, California. This is not a remote opportunity.



KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Payroll Processing:



    • Process bi-weekly or monthly payroll for all employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.


    • Review and verify timekeeping records and resolve any discrepancies.


    • Calculate wages, overtime, bonuses, and deductions.


    • Advanced use of Paylocity software.


  • Compliance and Reporting:



    • Ensure payroll tax compliance by preparing and submitting federal, state, and local tax filings.


    • Prepare and distribute payroll reports, including earnings statements and tax documents (W-2, 1099).


    • Maintain accurate payroll records and employee files.


  • Employee Support:



    • Address employee inquiries regarding payroll, benefits, and deductions.


    • Provide guidance on payroll policies and procedures.


    • Assist employees with timekeeping and payroll system issues.


  • System Management:



    • Maintain and update payroll systems and software.


    • Ensure data integrity and accuracy in the payroll system.


    • Collaborate with HR and IT departments to streamline payroll processes and implement system upgrades.


  • Reconciliation and Auditing:



    • Perform regular payroll reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.


    • Assist with internal and external audits related to payroll.


    • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.


DESIRED SKILLS & BACKGROUND



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field preferred.


  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in payroll processing and administration.


  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll regulations.


  • Proficiency in payroll software (Paylocity and UKG) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).


  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.


  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.


  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.


  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.


  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation preferred.
