Interviews can be nerve-wracking, and encountering tricky questions can add to the stress. However, with the right preparation and approach, you can confidently navigate these challenges and showcase your skills and qualifications.

 

Common tricky interview questions and how to answer them

 

  1. "Tell me about a time when you failed."

    This question aims to assess your resilience and ability to learn from mistakes. Focus on a specific instance where you faced a setback. Describe the situation, the challenges you encountered, and the steps you took to overcome the failure. Highlight the lessons you learned and how they have positively impacted your growth and development.

    For example, you could discuss a project that didn't meet expectations and how you used the experience to develop new strategies and improve your skills.

  2. "Why should we hire you?"

    This is your opportunity to sell yourself and differentiate yourself from other candidates. Tailor your response to the specific job requirements and the company's needs. Highlight your relevant skills, experience, and accomplishments that make you a strong fit for the role. Emphasise how your unique qualities and perspectives can contribute to the company's success.

    For instance, you might say, "I believe my strong analytical skills, combined with my experience in project management, make me an ideal candidate for this position. I am confident that I can contribute significantly to the team's goals and help drive the company's success."

  3. "What is your biggest weakness?"

    Be honest but strategic in your answer. Choose a weakness that is not critical to the job and demonstrate how you are actively working to improve it. Provide specific examples of steps you are taking to address this weakness and highlight the progress you have made.

    For example, you could say, "While public speaking was once a challenge for me, I have been taking public speaking courses and practicing regularly to improve my confidence and delivery."

  4. "Describe a situation where you disagreed with a colleague or senior?"

    This question assesses your ability to handle conflict and maintain professional relationships. Focus on a constructive disagreement where you were able to express your viewpoint respectfully and find a mutually beneficial solution. Highlight your ability to communicate effectively, compromise, and maintain a positive working relationship.

    For instance, you might describe a time when you disagreed with a colleague’s approach to a project and how you worked together to find a solution that satisfied both of your concerns.

  5. "Where do you see yourself in five years?"

    Show your ambition and alignment with the company's goals. Demonstrate your understanding of the company's direction and how your career aspirations fit within its future plans. Highlight your long-term career objectives and how the current position can help you achieve them.

    For example, you could say, "In five years, I see myself as a seasoned professional in this field, contributing to the company's growth and innovation. I believe that this position will provide me with the opportunity to develop my skills and take on greater responsibilities."
